Tulsa Chiropractor Shares 7 Tips to Prevent Neck Pain

1. Proper Pillow. You spend 1/3 of your life on one, so be sure it's the right one! Your head should be aligned with your shoulder, as if you were drawing a line from ear to shoulder and down the middle of your body horizontally. If your head tilts up or down you are putting pressure on your spine.

2.Don't sleep on your stomach! This does weird things to your posture. Your head is tilted at awkward angles and your spine is not supported by the mattress.  If you can't sleep any other way, put a pillow under your chest.

3.Exercise. Good for your whole body, but especially important to retain the full range of motion that your cervical spine can perform.  Stretching also helps prevent arthritis.

4.Set up your computer at a proper ergonomic height. Scrunching your shoulders forward and leaning into a computer all day does horrible things to your neck and upper back. Tight, tense muscles and poor posture can lead to a reversed cervical curve in your neck, resulting in long-term pain.

5.Relax. Time away from computer screens allows your neck to spend some time in its normal, healthy position.

6.Drink water. Lots of it. Water hydrates the discs in  your spine, which are basically fluid-filled cushions. Dehydrated cushions are not...well, cushiony...and lead to damage and injury.

7.Supplement. Glucosamine helps prevent the breakdown of cartilage in the joints, Boswellia is an anti-inflammatory, SAMe supports joint health and relieves pain, and Magnesium supports bones and nerve health. Even better, consistently eat a healthful diet of fresh vegetables and fruits, nuts, fish and whole grains. Avoid processed foods and fast food restaurants.

And there you have it.  Seven tips and the hope that neck pain is something you never have to experience.
