Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative Disc Disease, or DJD, is usually diagnosed later in life as the discs in the spine start to break down from aging. A number of conditions can result, including osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis (which is a narrowing of the spine) and disc herniation. If you are in pain from any of these conditions, you know how miserable they can be. Your chiropractor in Tulsa is available to help you find some relief from these conditions.

Degenerative Disc Disease is more deterioration than disease. It is really just a catch-all name for the wear and tear on the discs of the spine that happens over years of movement. Spinal discs are the round, gel-filled cushions between each vertebrae in our spines. They provide a shock absorption function, similar to the ones in your car, that keep the bone and nerves from rubbing against one another. But over years of wear and tear, the discs start to break down, dry out, and tear. This degeneration results in friction that can wear away the bone tissue (osteoarthritis), or cause tears or bulges in the disc itself.

Symptoms of DJD almost always consist of spinal pain in the neck, mid-back or low back. In the early stages of DJD, you might not have any symptoms at all, and that is one of the times when your spine can benefit the most from routine chiropractic adjustments that keep the spine in perfect alignment and prevent the friction that misaligned vertebrae can cause. However, once the deterioration sets in, it is impossible to restore the damage.

Taking good care of your spine is the key to preventing degenerative disc disease. Drinking plenty of water throughout your life can help keep the discs hydrated. Regular chiropractic treatments (Dr. Cole recommends once a month), help keep the spine in line and prevents a build-up of scar tissue if a small injury occurs. Ice and heat are beneficial. Strengthening and stretching exercise is another essential part of keeping the spine healthy. If you are in constant pain, disc deterioration could be the cause.
