Whiplash FAQ's

Your Tulsa Chiropractor Treats Whiplash

How do I know if I have whiplash?

Whiplash is caused by an impact that "whips" the neck forward, and then "whips" it backward, causing hyperextension of the soft tissue structures in the neck and cervical spine.  Whiplash is an injury typically seen after a rear-end collision. The symptoms can include pain in the back and sides of the neck, often radiating into the shoulders, upper back, and mid-back; a feeling of weakness like your head is too heavy for your neck to hold it up; muscle spasm in the neck and shoulder; swelling; chronic headache or migraine; ringing in the ears; visual impairment; TMJ (temporomandibular joint pain; and reduced mobility in the neck.

Can whiplash be treated at home?
A whiplash injury may be felt immediately or even after several days. Rest and ice packs applied to the area are important for the first 2-3 days following the injury to aid with reduction of swelling. Muscle tissue, tendons, ligaments and spinal discs can all become damaged in this type of injury. Professional treatment can aid with the reduction of not only short-term pain, but also long-term pain.

How long will I have whiplash pain?
Twenty-five to 50% of people who have a whiplash injury can experience long-term or permanent issues which can include headaches, migraines, chronic neck pain, ringing in the ears, postural impairment and potentially osteoarthritis or degeneration of the spine as a result of these injuries. It is important to seek treatment early, not only to aid in the recovery of the immediate pain, but also due to the risk of long-term pain and spinal impairment.

How does chiropractic treatment help whiplash?

Chiropractic treatment and therapeutic modalities performed in a chiropractic clinic not only aid in the reduction of pain and muscle spasms but also in the restoration of joint function and mobility. Therapeutic exercises aid in strengthening muscle tissue, with the goal of regaining activity as soon as possible
