• What Does an Adjustment Do?
A chiropractic adjustment is a quick, specific force applied to a joint at a certain angle that is designed to release a joint back into its natural position. Any joint in the body can be adjusted, from shoulders to feet, but patients normally come to the chiropractor for neck and back pain. In 2019, in a study conducted on patients with low back pain, an MRI was performed after a chiropractic manipulation that showed that the patients in the group who received a chiropractic treatment had an increase in spacing between the spinal vertebrae after a treatment. They also reported a decrease in pain. This study showed how effective chiropractic treatment is at releasing spinal adhesions and opening up the spaces between vertebrae to allow for proper nerve flow. Another study showed an increase of 8-13 degrees of range of motion in a joint after an adjustment, along with local pain relief. These studies, along with studies on the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment for pain relief, are the evidence that chiropractic improves the health of the spine. As a pleasant side effect, chiropractic treatment also reduces pain! Removing restrictions to nerve flow is one of chiropractic's primary goals, because when the nerves that serve our internal organs and muscles are working properly, your whole body is healthier.
